Northeastern Eye Institute Vision Correction Blog

The choice between wearing glasses or contacts is really a personal one, based on your own preferences. Both methods of vision correction work extremely well and both offer many choices.

Choosing a Pair of Glasses

Glasses have become so stylish-looking that you can use them as an fashion accessory. This applies to sunglasses too, which are now being worn year-round for vision protection against the sun's UV rays.

Our opticians will be happy to show you many styles and to make suggestions for frames that will look best on you. They will factor in your eye color, facial shape, skin and hair coloring, clothing styles and colors, and even your personality. If you are a bright, outgoing person, perhaps a more dramatic style of glasses frame will express that. If you are a more quiet and subtle person, a different frame style can express that.

Some examples of our offerings are:
  • New versions of traditional favorites, both the cat-eye shape and square shape
  • Bold and unusual styles with unusual details and frame shapes
  • Decorative features such as rhinestones that give a jewel-like appearance
  • Designer styles with fashionable logos such as Gucci, Dior, Fendi, etc.

We are confident that in our spacious optical shop you will find just the right glasses to fit your personality and image.

Choosing Contact Lenses
At NEI we offer every type of contact lens that is available worldwide. Your contact lenses can address more than just your visual acuity – they can give therapeutic help and cosmetic enhancement as well. You might want:
  • Soft lenses for comfortable correction of myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism or presbyopia
  • Hard lenses for both vision correction and help with a distorted corneal shape such as happens in keratoconus
  • Bifocals if you need both near and far correction
  • Tinted lenses if you would like to modify your eye color
  • Disposable lenses for the convenience of not having to clean your lenses every night
  • Specialty lenses for help with an eye injury or hereditary disfigurement

Contact lenses can be very convenient and effective if you have the right type for your lifestyle. Please see our EyeMotion Video Learning Center for more on contact lenses and glasses.

To learn more about the choices we offer in eyewear, please contact our ophthalmology office today for an initial appointment.

Am I a Candidate for iLASIK?

The best laser vision correction results happen for those who are the best candidates for their procedure. If you have been told that you are not a good candidate for LASIK, you might be able to have iLASIK instead.

If you have thinner-than-average corneas or severe myopia, the standard LASIK flap may not be safe. But if the flap is made with a laser, it can be made thinner and more precisely than is possible with the microkeratome blade used in LASIK. The procedure that uses a laser to make the flap is IntraLase, which has a history of impressive results for those who are good candidates for it.

The name "iLASIK" is the name for IntraLase when it is done with the VISX CustomVue system with the Abbott Medical Optics (AMO) femtosecond laser for making the corneal flap. In diagnosing your vision, iLASIK uses Wavefront technology to obtain a far more accurate measurement of each eye's aberrations than is possible with traditional LASIK. It is the same Wavefront technology that is used in Custom LASIK.

Basic Requirements For a Good LASIK or iLASIK Candidate
  • Age of 18 years or more - so that your eyes and vision have finished developing
  • Good general health - for a good surgical recovery
  • Stable vision with no prescription changes for at least a year - if your vision is changing, there would be little point in performing iLASIK, as the results would not last
  • Freedom from eye diseases involving the cornea and retina - the iLASIK laser works on the cornea so if there is scarring or instability on the cornea, there would be little vision improvement; and the retinal cells must be well-functioning for you to have good vision with or without iLASIK.
The best patient is an educated patient, and your iLASIK outcome will partly depend on how well you understand and follow your surgeon's instructions. At NEI, we want you to know exactly what procedure you are having, and we will be happy to explain how your iLASIK process will work. We will also answer all your questions, so when you come for your consultation, please bring them with you and feel free to make notes.

The only way to determine for sure whether you are a good iLASIK candidate is to have a thorough eye and vision exam done by a qualified LASIK surgeon. Please give us a call or send an email if you would like to schedule an initial consultation with one of our iLASIK surgeons.

Importance of Annual Eye Exams

Even if you have had excellent vision your entire life, it is a good idea to go for an eye exam once a year. This is especially true as you enter your 40s.

The best way to prevent the development of serious eye conditions is to diagnose and treat a problem in its early stages. Many eye conditions are age-related and affect people once they reach their 40s, 50s, 60s, and 70s. Some of these conditions are:

Glaucoma
Cataracts
Age-related macular degeneration

If these conditions are not treated in a timely manner, they can lead to blindness. The best way to maintain healthy vision is to have your eyes examined by an experienced ophthalmologist at regular yearly intervals.

If you have a refractive error such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism, it is especially important to go for regular annual eye exams to make sure that your current prescription is still accurate. Many daily activities such as driving can be dangerous if your prescription is not giving you clear vision.

What Does an Eye Exam Include?
The experienced Northeastern Pennsylvania ophthalmologists at NEI offer comprehensive eye exams to all of our patients. These examinations will include:

• Review of your medical history, including general health, family history, and eye health
• Vision test
• Pupil response test
• Slit lamp exam to evaluate the health of your cornea
• Intra-ocular pressure (IOP) measurement
• Ophthalmoscopy to examine your eye’s retinal tissue, blood vessels, and nerves
• Visual field examination

By scheduling one of our comprehensive eye care exams every year, you can be confident that any dangerous eye conditions will be detected and treated promptly, ensuring the maintenance of healthy eyes and good vision for years to come.

Please contact our Pennsylvania eye care office today to schedule your eye exam. We serve patients in Scranton, Wilkes-Barre, Hazelton, Lackawanna, Luzerne, and Northeastern Pennsylvania.
