March 18, 2009 — The first laser assisted corneal transplant in the Northeastern United States was recently performed at Northeastern Eye Institute in Scranton, Pennsylvania. The procedure was performed by Dr. Christopher S. Jordan, a third generation ophthalmologist who is a cornea, refractive and cataract surgeon.
A corneal transplant, also known as a corneal graft, is a procedure that involves removal of the central portion of a diseased cornea, replacing it with a matched donor cornea. The procedure is performed to correct the absence of acceptable vision due to scarring, tissue damage, disease or trauma to the cornea. Traditionally performed using metal blades, the new, advanced procedure performed by Dr. Jordan is called Intralase Enhanced Keratoplasty (IEK) which applies laser technology developed for LASIK surgery for corneal transplantation.
The primary advantage of incorporating Intralase technology into this procedure is to individually customize the incisions to each patient as determined by the surgeon. Furthermore, this approach results in faster and stronger wound healing, producing superior visual results.
This technology and procedure is available only at a handful of centers in the United States including Northeastern Eye Institute which operates 15 offices around Northeastern Pennsylvania.

Dr. Christopher Jordan who performed this cutting edge procedure at Northeastern Eye Institute is a graduate of the University of Scranton. He received his medical degree from Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia and completed his ophthalmology residency at the Drexel University College of Medicine, also in Philadelphia. This was followed by an intensive cornea surgical fellowship with Price Vision Group and Cornea Research Foundation of America, Indianapolis, Indiana.
