Cataract Pennsylvania

Northeastern Eye Institute Serves Pennsylvania Patients in Scranton, Wilkes-Barre, Hazleton, and Surrounding Areas in Lackawanna, Luzerne and Other Counties

Due to the aging process, over time the natural lens of the eye can become clouded, resulting in blurred vision. This condition is referred to as a cataract.

Cataract Surgery

ReSTOR ScrantonCataract surgery is the optimal solution for this condition. Also known as phaco-emulsification, this cataract removal procedure is ultrasound-based and requires no stitching. Cataract surgery is performed by an ophthalmologist at NEI's state-of-the-art ambulatory surgical center (ASC).

Cataract surgery is very successful in restoring vision. It is among the most commonly performed surgical procedures in the United States, with over 1.5 million cataract surgeries taking place each year. Over 90% of those who undergo cataract surgery regain excellent vision, somewhere between 20/20 and 20/40. Patients can return to normal working activities within a couple days after surgery.

Cataract PennsylvaniaDuring the procedure, the NEI surgeon will remove your clouded lens, and in most cases replace it with a clear, artificial intraocular lens (IOL). New IOLs are being developed to make the procedure less complicated for the physician and the lens more helpful to patients. One such lens is called the AcrySof® ReSTOR® IOL, which is a newly developed IOL that allows patients to achieve good vision near, far, and all distances in between. Improved vision at all distances was previously not possible using conventional IOLs. NEI's experienced cataract surgeons offer this new and exciting option to our cataract patients.

A NEW LOOK ON LIFE WITH THE NEW RESTOR® LENS

Cataract SurgeryFinally, the opportunity for freedom from reading glasses and bifocals - at Northeastern Eye Institute.

Previously, intra-ocular lenses (IOLs)  used in cataract procedures provided good functional distance vision. Life without reading glasses or bifocals was NOT an option for most cataract patients.

Now, you do have that option at NEI.

The AcrySof® ReSTOR® IOL, popularly known as the ReSTOR® Lens, is designed to improve vision for all distances, both near and far.

Does this mean freedom from glasses? For many, yes. With the ReSTOR® Lens, many people can read, drive, and do other tasks without glasses. In fact, during clinical trials, 80% of ReSTOR® Lens patients reported never wearing glasses after having the lens implanted in both eyes, compared to only 8% of patients with monofocal lenses.

However, as with many things, there may be a tradeoff - you should discuss all of the benefits and risks with your NEI doctor.

How does the ReSTOR® Lens work?

As you perform daily activities such as reading, watching television, or working at the computer, your eyes are constantly focusing on objects at varying distances - up-close, far away, and everything in between. The ability to quickly change focus throughout this range of vision is called accommodation. Unfortunately, this ability diminishes as we grow older, causing us to become dependent on bifocals or reading glasses.

The ReSTOR® Lens was designed to provide quality near to distance vision by combining the strengths of diffractive and refractive technologies. Similar technology has been used for years in microscopes and telescopes to improve image quality, and has now been patented for use in intraocular lenses by Alcon®.

How is the ReSTOR® Lens inserted?

The ReSTOR® Lens is inserted into your eye during your cataract procedure. Once the NEI ophthalmologist removes your cataract, he/she will insert the ReSTOR® Lens through the same tiny incision and set the lens into its permanent position.

Following the procedure, you will rest for a short while before returning home. Your doctor will examine your eye within 24 hours. A protective shield may need to be worn for a few days. However, most patients return to normal work activities within a day or two following the procedure.

Vision for your everyday life--

Incredible range of vision
For most patients, the ReSTOR® Lens delivers excellent near and distance vision and good intermediate vision without reading glasses or bifocals. In fact, with this increase in vision quality, ReSTOR® Lens patients would be able to pass the visual acuity portion of the driver's license exam in most states.

The ability to read quickly and easily
In an independently conducted study, ReSTOR® Lens patients were tested to see how easily they could read paragraphs of decreasing font size, and their results were compared to patients with other IOLs. While only one of 13 patients with other IOLs could read small type (such as the newspaper), four of five ReSTOR® patients were still able to read small type quickly and easily.

Better vision for various lighting situations
The ReSTOR® Lens delivers quality vision for various lighting situations. In brightly lit conditions, the central diffractive portion of the ReSTOR® Lens sends light waves simultaneously to both near and distant focal points, while in dimly lit conditions, the surrounding refractive area sends greater energy to distance vision.

The ReSTOR® Lens is now available at Northeastern Eye Institute (NEI), and the procedure is performed by a number of NEI ophthalmologists:
