NEI offers comprehensive eye exams that are performed by experienced eye doctors with several years of experience in the diagnosis and treatment of vision disorders.
A typical eye exam encompasses the following:
- History - Patient's visual state, primary complaint, general health, family data, allergies.
- Visual Acuity - Measurement of vision; measured at 20 feet (20/20).
- Pupil Response - Quick flashlight test to elicit a constriction or dilation of the pupil.
- Lensometry - A quick digital or automatic determination of a lens prescription.
- Autorefraction - A quick, automatic determination of the patient's prescription.
- Refraction - A precise determination of the patient's prescription for eyewear.
- Biomiocroscopy - A slit lamp exam that details the external structures of the eye (cornea).
- Tonometry - Measure of the eye's intra-ocular pressure (IOP).
- Ophthalmoscopy - Examination of the retinal tissue, blood vessels, and nerves.
- Visual Fields - Test of the neurological function of the visual pathway. Determines integrity of visual system using three types of visual field technologies (Humphrey® Field Analyzer II, Fieldmaster, and Octopus).
Many patients are required to undergo an exam with dilation drops, which allow for a more complete peripheral examination with an indirect ophthalmoscope.
