Specialty & Scleral Contact Lenses

Advanced, customized vision solutions available right here in Northeastern PA.

At Northeastern Eye Institute, we’re proud to be one of the only practices in Northeastern Pennsylvania offering advanced specialty contact lens fittings — providing life-changing vision solutions for patients with unique or complex eye conditions.

Specialty contact lenses are designed for individuals who may not achieve clear or comfortable vision with standard soft lenses. These lenses go beyond routine correction, offering customized designs for patients with corneal irregularities, keratoconus, severe dry eye, or post-surgical corneas.

Among these, scleral lenses represent one of the most innovative options. Made from rigid gas permeable materials, scleral lenses are larger than traditional lenses and rest gently on the white part of the eye (the sclera). This design creates a fluid-filled cushion over the cornea, improving comfort, protecting the eye’s surface, and delivering stable, crisp vision even in the most challenging cases.

Zenlens™: Personalized Precision

For patients who need the highest level of customization, we offer the Zenlens™, one of the most advanced scleral lens systems available today. Each Zenlens is designed using detailed imaging and measurements of your eyes to achieve a truly personalized fit — maximizing comfort, vision quality, and long-term eye health.

Benefits of Zenlens include:

  • Tailored design for a precise, comfortable fit

  • Exceptional vision correction for keratoconus and post-surgical corneas

  • Advanced, breathable materials that support all-day wearability

  • Smooth, contoured edges for superior comfort and eye protection

FAQs

Specialty and scleral lenses are ideal for patients who have corneal irregularities (like keratoconus), chronic dry eye, post-surgical vision issues, or trouble achieving clear, comfortable vision with standard soft lenses. Our doctors will perform a thorough evaluation to determine if these advanced lenses are right for you.

Unlike standard lenses that rest directly on the cornea, scleral lenses are larger and rest on the white part of the eye (the sclera). This creates a fluid-filled layer between the lens and cornea, providing exceptional comfort, stability, and protection — especially for sensitive or irregular eyes.

Yes! Many patients find scleral lenses even more comfortable than traditional contacts. The smooth design and fluid-filled cushion help reduce irritation and dryness while maintaining all-day comfort and clear vision.

With proper care and cleaning, scleral lenses typically last one to two years. Your eye doctor will guide you on maintenance, replacement schedules, and lens care best practices.

Coverage varies depending on your insurance plan and medical condition. Some plans cover these lenses when they’re medically necessary (such as for keratoconus or post-surgical corneas). Our team can help verify your benefits and explain any out-of-pocket costs.
